We are excited to welcome Manchester Sacred Harp for an afternoon of social singing in our Great Hall. Join in or simply sit and listen!
Sacred Harp is an American four-part harmony choral tradition dating back to the 1800s. The four voice parts sit facing each other in a square formation, singing into the centre of the room and together the massed voices make a fantastic sound.
Sacred Harp is sung for pleasure, not performance. It’s about connection rather than perfection. All voices are welcome and no experience is needed. Participation is highly encouraged!
It’s part of the tradition to run ‘singing schools’ to help newcomers get to grips with the basics. As this isn’t a choir, there will be no audition and you won’t be asked to sing alone. You’ll be shown how to navigate the song book and listen for your part, run through the shape note system, and then you’ll learn by doing!
People from all faiths and none are welcome – the focus is purely on the camaraderie of making music together.
If you wish to take part, it is FREE, but a booking is required as space is limited. Please book via the provided link.
If you wish to simply listen, there is no need to book!
The museum has a private Pay & Display car park. All parking is paid for on arrival either online, over the phone or by using the onsite machine.
