From Cane to Court: Sugar Workshop

Sugar was once the height of luxury, but its sweetness came at a bitter cost.

In this hands-on workshop, participants will first be shown how to shape and decorate sugar-paste from an early modern recipe. Using simple tools and natural colours, you’ll be able create beautiful delicacies!

After that, participants will be given pre-cut pieces of raw sugarcane and use various tools to explore first-hand how difficult it is to extract refined sugar from its raw form. Along the way, we’ll uncover how sugar dazzled European courts and dinner tables, and how that glittering world depended on brutal labour, slavery, and empire.

Strictly for ages 18+ years.

• Once this workshop has finished, the tutors will be hosting a drop-in sugar-paste decorating session in our kitchen that is appropriate for all ages. More information will be available on the day.
• The museum has a private Pay & Display car park. All parking is paid for on arrival either online, over the phone or by using the onsite machine.
